Professional & Personal Inspirations
Dr. Shehadi has been inspired professionally by the writings of giants in the field of medicine, including Dr. Sir William Osler, Dr. Harvey W. Cushing, as well as that of Dr. Wilder G. Penfield.
Dr. Shehadi has drawn personal inspirations from the innovative and impactful lives of: Pope John Paul II, George Eastman, Mother Theresa, Michael Jordan, Steve Jobs and Elon Musk.
Sir William Osler MD (1849-1919)
Dr. William Osler, is considered to be one of the greatest physicians of all time. He is one of the four founding professors of Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was educated at McGill University, which is where I received some of my education. In the late eighteen hundreds, he was a physician at the Montreal General Hospital (MGH). I did some of my surgical training at the MGH and walked the same halls as Dr. Osler which was inspiring. My favorite quote from William Osler that I still think of to this day is that, “The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease.”
Harvey Williams Cushing
Harvey Williams Cushing was an American neurosurgeon giant. He is often called the “father of modern neurosurgery.” In the beginning of the 20th century, he developed many surgical techniques, wrote many books. He has a few diseases and some surgical instruments named after him. He was at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where I later did some training. I walked the same halls a century later. And I published a paper while I was at Harvard.
Wilder Graves Penfield
Wilder Graves Penfield, MD was a pioneering neurosurgeon. Like Sir William Osler, Penfield spent much time at McGill University. Dr. Penfield spent the majority of his career at the famous Montreal Neurological Institute, where I also did my neurosurgical residency training. Dr. Penfield designed instruments that we still use every day in neurosurgery. He has writing numerous papers on brain surgery for epilepsy. I walk the halls and even sat in the same operating room chair as Dr. Penfield. This was truly inspiring and had a lasting impact on me.
